Steven Gefrom has created a unique career in art. Gefrom, by any objective opinion, is a master painter. Over the last 35 years, his art path has taken a circuitous route to his style today. His studies have been with many of the modern masters of representational painting including Bettina Steinke and Richard Schmidt. As one of a few select students of Richard Schmid at the Palette and Chisel Academy in Chicago during the 1980s, he spent many months painting alongside Rose Frentzen, Scott Burdick, Dan Gethartz, and Susan Lyon. He made his way into advertising to pay bills after art school. Some lucky collectors have his paintings that were done for Jurassic Park for universal studios. He subsequently developed a small and loyal collector following and raised his son. After a recent battle with cancer, his style changed again. He narrowed his focus and drew small eye studies during this time. He notoriously drew them while in a chemo chair in a hospital. He is a more recognizable figure on social media these days. A son of the west, over the last 30 years his painting travels have taken him many times throughout New Mexico, Arizona, and California where he lives. Recognized as a painter’s painter, his large oil paintings have achieved cult status. He has an art educational pedigree rarely matched. His paintings display a masterful understanding of technique. His work has been compared to Sargent, and Sorolla among others. A striking figure, Gefrom caries a Sam Shepard quality. Self-deprecating and humble, you would not know that this man’s work is being recognized as a formidable force in western art. While watching him photograph models for a project reminds one of a director setting a scene much like the way David Lynch works. Quietly creating great art and committing something to the permanent record. Art to be cherished and analyzed for generations.

Those who have seen the new work by master painter Steven Gefrom have had emotional reactions that have surprised many. Some have teared up, some have wept, but most stand for a moment, completely silent, with mouth open before moving closer, struck by the sheer beauty of the work. A couple of visitors to the studio have dubbed the painting, The Western Mona Lisa. The subject of the painting, Graylen Eastwood, looks directly back at us, the viewer. A lantern is illuminating her piercing green eyes and enigmatic smile. Visitors debate her expression. Some swear it is a friendly smile, others suggest to the contrary. The warm light of the lantern illuminates both green eyes, but the iris of the eye that is closest to the lantern is tinted with warm gold light. "The light and time of the day is similar to Sargent's Carnation, Lilly, Lilly Rose”, Gefrom explained. Gefrom is referring to Sargent's beloved painting at the Tate Britain. It is known for depicting the ephemeral window of time at dusk, when the sky casts a delicate twilight glow before the light fades. In Sargent's case, casting down on children lighting paper lanterns while standing in a flower garden. In Mr. Gefrom's masterpiece, a beautiful woman in a yellow dress. The mixed light of the lantern and sky create an enveloping illusion and subtle effects on her face and dress. Mr. Gefrom is a master painter from any objective viewpoint. His work displays the maturity of an artist that has been painting for three decades. His work is not just mere likeness but enveloping illusion by use of fine drawing, color temperature, and hard and soft edges of paint. This knowledge comes hard-won by study with some of the greatest representational painters of our time and decades of painting experience. He has studied under the late Richard Schmid and Bettina Steinke to name just two masters, as well as spent countless hours of direct study of original masterpieces in museums in the U.S. and Europe. He was part of a rather well-known group of students that studied and painted next to Mr. Schmid at the Palette and Chisel Academy in the American city of Chicago Illinois in 1989 that included Daniel F. Gethartz, Rose Frantzen, Scott Burdick, and Susan Lyon. Gefrom's painting is preliminary work for a larger painting of 2 meters tall for which the artist is setting about preparations. The model was posing sitting atop a white horse. One can only imagine the future full-sized work. Judging by this masterpiece, this Western Mona Lisa, one may assume that it too will generate deep emotions from scores of new viewers. Gefrom’s work is collected throughout the United States and Europe.

“When I was young, I got to personally view many drawings of horses by Leonardo de Vinci and John Singer Sargent. These would have a profound effect on me and my drawings to this day. Inspired by these works, I would sit and draw some of the horses around our neighborhood and also at the Del Mar Racetrack. Drawing quickly with a conte chalk, vine charcoal, ball point pen, or water color, I would try to get down the equine anatomy in quick sketches before the horse would move once again. I always appreciated my early instructors, one of whom sculpted horses, for not letting me get away with "close enough" but demanding I get a thorough understanding of equine and human anatomy and be able to translate that to paper, canvas, or clay.”

Richard Schmid. I was amazed at how talented Steven was even back then, and it has been wonderful watching him progress into the master artist he is today. What I love the most about his work is the emotional impact of his paintings, which to me is the most important part of any art form. It's the one thing that cannot really be taught and something that I've always admired about Steven's work. I also absolutely love the work on his website. Scott Burdick
