STEVEN GEFROM
Steven Gefrom is an American author, photographer, and artist.
He is often compared to the late Sam Shepard — writer, actor, image-maker, restless across forms. Gefrom deflects the comparison. It has followed him a long time. There is a strain of the American independent rogue about him, part writer, part horseman, out of another era, and he would rather the attention go to the work.
He built his first camera at twelve and has been thinking about how a photograph gets made ever since. He studied black and white film under the late Professor David Wing, working across large format, medium format, and 35mm. He still shoots on film. You may find him traveling the American West with his equipment, and at times with his models.
As a writer, Gefrom works in novels and screenplays. The years behind a camera, and the miles across the American West, have marked the prose. Readers have often noted its cinematic register. His subjects are largely American: the West, war, cinema, the private lives caught inside larger forces. His novels include Western Sun, Critical Mass, Again, and Liza in Paris.

Gefrom works with black and white and color film negatives
that are 8″x10″, 4″x5″ 15-Perf IMAX, (120 roll film), 2¼ by 2¼ inch, and 35mm film.
